Breguet Minute Repeater Yellow Gold Pocket Watch - Manual winding . 18K yellow gold demi-hunter case ( 52 mm ) Monogrammed JHVA. Front crystal centered by blue enamel Arabic numerals . White dial with black Breguet numerals. Inscribed "James Henry Van Alen from his father, Sept. 19th 1923. Circa 1920's . Pre-owned with Breguet archive papers stating the watch was completed in December 1922 and sold to Mr. Van Alen on Sept 3th 1929 for the price of 4500 French francs.
James Henry Van Alen is best known as the founder of the International Tennis Hall of Fame, the largest tennis museum in the world. He donated the museum to the United States Tennis Association in 1954. He was a poet, musician, publisher, civil leader and raconteur. His greatest legacy is the inventor of the tiebreaker in tennis. He developed the Van Alen Streamlined Scoring System ( VASSS) which advocates a sudden-death tie breaker to end prolonged sets and matches. Mr. Van Alen was also a single and doubles champion in court tennis. He was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame in 1965.
